EPDM Liquid Rubber Application

About Liquid Rubber

Liquid Rubber is a high solids, liquid solution of EPDM Rubber. It becomes a solid elastomer through a unique free radical cure process, which works at temperatures of 12.7°C (55°F) and higher.

Even before the cure process has taken place, the material is waterproof and can withstand freezing temperatures, without damaging the final film properties.

Acceptable Substrates for Liquid Rubber Application

Liquid Rubber EPDM can be used on a wide variety of surfaces, mostly without the need for a primer. The material can be applied directly to substrates that are solid, stable, non-porous and have a uniform surface – such as a flat roofs.

Some examples of these include:

  • EPDM Rubber Membrane on flat or sloped roofs
  • Weathered Steel Siding
  • Weathered Fibreglass
  • Weathered standing seam and corrugated metal roofs
  • Weathered Vinyl, PVC and Polycarbonate plastic
  • Foam insulation for pipe
  • Cast Concrete foundations

Liquid Rubber Application over EPDM Rubber Roof Sheets

If you have an existing EPDM rubber roof, then it can easily be re-coated with Liquid Rubber. Simply clean the surface before re-coating.

Some swelling may occur when EPDM rubber sheets are re-coated with Liquid Rubber – this is normal and is a result of solvent absorption. The swelling will resolve with time. Recovery of the surface is accelerated by higher temperatures. You can expect the surface to entirely recover in between 1 to 2 weeks at a temperature of 26.7°C (80°F); this is extended to 6 to 8 weeks at a temperature of 15.6°C (60°F).

Choosing your application method

The choice of application method is determined by the shape and size of the surface to be coated. Use the checklist below to see which method is recommended for your roof:

Does your roof type match any of the following:

  • Standing Seam
  • Corrugated
  • Irregular Surfaces, Curved
  • 5,000 square foot or more in surface area

Recommended application method: Airless Spray

See our Spray Liquid Rubber page

Does your roof type match any of the following:

  • Flat Roof
  • 5,000 square foot or less in surface area

Recommended application method: Brush, Squeegee and Roller
